Kate Somerville Finds New Home Under Rare Beauty Brands

Unilever has sold premium skincare brand Kate Somerville to Rare Beauty Brands, signaling a strategic shift as both companies chart new growth trajectories in the beauty sector. Here's what you need to know:

  • Unilever has sold Kate Somerville, known for its ExfoliKate and Goat Milk Cleanser, to Rare Beauty Brands, marking the end of its ownership since 2015.

  • Rare Beauty Brands, which owns Patchology and Dot Dot Dash, plans to expand Kate Somerville’s reach and innovation under CEO Chris Hobson, though deal terms remain undisclosed.

  • Unilever cited alignment and growth potential as reasons for the sale, after spending 18 months attempting a brand turnaround, according to Unilever Prestige CEO Mary Carmen Gasco-Buisson.

  • The move follows Unilever’s earlier shutdown of REN Clean Skin Care and reflects a broader restructuring of its Prestige Beauty portfolio, which includes brands like Dermalogica, Murad, and Tatcha.

  • The sale comes amid leadership change, with Vasiliki Petrou, long-time head of Unilever’s Prestige division, exiting the company in 2023 after ten years.
