Allbirds' zero-carbon shoe

Allbirds is in the midst of a multiyear transformation and recently launched the first zero-carbon shoe. Here's what you need to know:

• The Moonshot project, which led to Allbirds' first zero-carbon shoe, started in 2022 and debuted in 2023 when it introduced an open-source toolkit to help other brands develop their own versions of the shoe.
• A limited, 500-unit run of the “M0.0NSHOT Zero” shoe is available at Allbirds stores in New York City, London, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
• The zero-carbon shoe comes as consumers want to prioritize sustainability. However, at $200 per pair, it will be interesting to see if consumers will pay more for sustainability, as many pull back on discretionary spending.
• Footwear made with recycled materials accounted for 20% of running and lifestyle sneaker sales in 2024, up from 5% in 2021, representing the consumer focus on sustainable brands.
• Alongside the Moonshot, Allbirds has reworked its portfolio, releasing an updated Wool Runner, the Tree Runner Go, and the vintage-inspired Courier.
